Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses are known for their durability, crisp vision correction, and long-term value. Unlike soft lenses, RGP lenses maintain their shape on the eye, providing clear and consistent vision - especially for patients with astigmatism, keratoconus, or more complex prescriptions. However, proper cleaning and care are essential to keep your lenses comfortable, safe, and performing at their best.
Because RGP lenses are firm and reusable for an extended period, they require a specific cleaning routine. Without proper care, protein deposits, debris, and bacteria can accumulate on the lens surface, leading to:
Consistent cleaning helps maintain comfort, clarity, and overall eye health.
1. Wash and Dry Your Hands First
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your lenses. Avoid moisturizing soaps, as they can leave residue on your fingers. Dry your hands with a lint-free towel to prevent fibers from sticking to the lenses.
2. Remove One Lens at a Time
To avoid mixing them up, clean one lens at a time. Place the lens in the palm of your hand.
3. Apply RGP Cleaning Solution
Use a cleaning solution specifically designed for RGP lenses. Apply a few drops onto the lens and gently rub it with your fingertip in a circular motion for about 20 seconds. This helps remove surface debris and protein buildup.
Never use tap water to clean your lenses. Water can introduce harmful microorganisms that may cause serious eye infections.
4. Rinse Thoroughly
After rubbing the lens, rinse it with a sterile saline or RGP conditioning solution as recommended by your eye doctor. This removes loosened debris and cleaning solution residue.
5. Disinfect and Store Properly
Place the cleaned lens in a clean lens case filled with fresh conditioning or disinfecting solution. Allow the lenses to soak overnight or for the amount of time recommended by your optometrist.
Never “top off” old solution. Always discard used solution and refill the case with fresh disinfecting solution each time.
